State and Local Tax Manager

The State and Local Tax Manager will play a key role in overseeing corporate state income tax, indirect taxes, and state compliance. This position requires a deep understanding of both direct and indirect tax, with a focus on state-level taxation, as well as experience in collaborating with executive leadership within the organization and at the "C-suite" level of client organizations. Strong leadership, project management, and communication skills are essential for success in this role.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Review and ensure the accuracy of stand-alone and consolidated state “C-Corp” income tax returns prepared by tax managers and team members.

  • Contribute to tax planning, special projects, and other strategic initiatives.

  • Develop and maintain relationships with internal and external tax professionals, while also providing mentorship and guidance to junior team members.

  • Offer expertise in the evaluation and enhancement of client indirect tax processes and systems.

  • Stay up-to-date with state and local sales and use tax laws and regulations.

  • Support in tax planning, restructuring, audit defense, reverse audits, and controversy work related to state and local tax issues.

  • Use Sales Tax software applications, such as Avalara and Vertex, to streamline and improve tax processes.

  • Conduct in-depth research on multi-state issues, including consolidated/unitary filing requirements and apportionment methodologies.

  • Manage multiple tasks and deadlines efficiently while maintaining a high standard of work.

  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with stakeholders at all levels.

Skills and Competencies:

  • Extensive knowledge of state and local tax laws, including sales and use tax.

  • Experience in planning, tax restructuring, audit defense, and handling tax controversies.

  • Proficiency with Sales Tax software such as Avalara and Vertex.

  • Strong tax research skills, particularly related to state and local filing requirements and apportionment methodologies.

  • Ability to manage multiple deadlines and complex projects with a high degree of accuracy.

  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with a demonstrated ability to work collaboratively.

  • Proven accountability for independently managing assignments and projects.

Education and Experience:

  • Minimum of 5+ years of experience in public accounting or corporate tax roles.

  • Experience at a Big-4 public accounting firm is highly preferred.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or a related field; a Master’s in Taxation or CPA/JD designation is a plus.

  • Willingness to travel to local client sites as needed.
